Craig Hall

Craig Hall was built in 1962 as a music building with donations from Catherine H. Craig. The original structure formed the western and southern section of the present building which, although it appears today as one edifice, was actually built as two separate wings. The original spaces housed classrooms, offices, a music library, and rehearsal rooms. Additional rehearsal space was added in 1968 to the north to accommodate large instrumental ensembles, and the building was renovated to hold the music and art departments. At present, the building houses the Music Department, college archives, and a student painting studio.

Instruments and Equipment

The Music Department maintains a small collection of student level instruments for use in emergencies.
Please contact your applied instructor to arrange for a short-term instrument loan. It is expected that any student
planning serious musical study will arrange for his own instrument, and it is strongly suggested that the student consult with his applied instructor before making the investment.

The department also owns a harpsichord, a student-grade consort of recorders, a theremin, various synthesizers, portable live sound and recording equipment, and a limited collection of marching percussion instruments. Usage of all of this equipment should be arranged through the Music Office and will be limited to use for classes and college-related projects.

Storage

Students enrolled in music courses or participating in music organizations are allowed to store books or musical instruments in the building during the academic year. Keys for student lockers may be obtained from the Music Office. At the time the key is issued, the student must sign an agreement to replace any lost key for the fee of $25.00. No charge is made, however, for the use of the lockers. The student is responsible for cleaning out the locker by the last day of classes for the academic year and for returning the key to the secretary. Failure to return the locker key on time will result in the student’s grades being withheld until the key is returned or the fee is paid. Lockers may be shared if necessary.

Students with oversized instruments may arrange to store the instruments in the large rehearsal room. Students are not to use personal locks on any lockers and should note that they store instruments in Craig Hall at their own risk.
